Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep Serum Review: Rice, Alpha-Arbutin, and a Very Loyal Following

2 min read

Beauty of Joseon built a whole brand identity around traditional Korean ingredients in modern formulas, and the Glow Deep Serum is the product that made that pitch land outside Korea. It's a small 30ml bottle with a big reputation, and unlike a lot of viral serums, the ingredient list actually backs up the marketing.

What rice extract and alpha-arbutin actually do

Rice extract is a mild brightening and antioxidant ingredient with a long history in Korean skincare — it's gentle enough for daily use and doesn't come with the irritation risk of stronger actives. Alpha-arbutin is the ingredient doing the real work here: it inhibits melanin production, which makes it effective against uneven tone, post-acne marks, and sun spots without the harshness of hydroquinone. Niacinamide rounds out the formula, adding barrier support and helping with the same tone-evening goal from a different angle.

Texture and how it applies

Thin and slightly tacky, closer to a serum-essence hybrid than a heavy treatment serum. It absorbs fast, layers cleanly under moisturizer, and doesn't leave the slight stickiness some alpha-arbutin formulas have. Basically no scent, which matters if you're layering it with other actives that already have a strong smell.

Who it's genuinely good for

  • Uneven skin tone, post-breakout marks, or early sun spots that aren't severe enough for a prescription treatment
  • Anyone who wants a brightening step that's gentle enough to use every day, morning and night, without a slow introduction period
  • People building a first "actives" routine — this is a low-irritation way to start

Who might not need it

  • Deep, stubborn hyperpigmentation may need something stronger (vitamin C at higher concentration, or a dermatologist-recommended option) — this is a maintenance-level brightener, not a fast fix
  • If your main concern is hydration rather than tone, a hyaluronic acid serum will do more for you

Where it fits in the routine

Serum is step 6 in the 10-step routine, after essence and before sheet masks or eye cream. It layers well with SKIN1004's centella ampoule if you want to alternate brightening and calming nights.

Bottom line: it's genuinely one of the better entry points into K-beauty actives — cheap enough to not think twice about, gentle enough to actually stick with, and it does what it says on the label.
